RNT Technology Overview

foils_spark

RNT’s patented NanoFoil® is a multilayer foil which enables reaction initiation (for propellant ignition, flares and fuses) and joining of dissimilar materials, making such applications predictable, controllable and far more affordable. When activated by a small pulse of local energy from electrical, optical or thermal sources, the foil precisely delivers localized heat up to temperatures of 2000°C in fractions (thousandths) of a second.

NanoFoil® is fabricated by vapor depositing thousands of alternating nanoscale layers of Aluminum (Al) and Nickel (Ni). When initiated by an electrical, thermal, mechanical or optical source they will mix and react to release heat energy in a predictable and controllable manner. Varying the composition of the foils and the thickness of the individual layers can control the velocities, temperatures and total energies of these reactions.

NanoBond® is RNT’s patented process for delivering a small pulse of localized energy to launch the NanoFoil ignition and in a fraction of a second, deliver the necessary amount of heat and energy to reflow solder or braze and create a strong, true metallic joint. Traveling approximately eight meters per second, the reaction’s rapid delivery coupled with its localized and versatile nature makes it ideal for many types of applications in large or small-area joining.
