US Army Awards RNT $500K Additional Funds for Further Development of Company’s Patented NanoFoil®
Funds to Target Joining of Dissimilar Materials for Lightweight Ground Vehicles, Helping Meet Army’s Critical Equipment Needs
Hunt Valley, MD – July 11, 2006
RNT, developer and manufacturer of its patented NanoFoil®, which precisely controls the instantaneous release of heat energy for joining and reaction initiation applications, announces $500,000 of funding from the US Army’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II Plus program. This, in addition to the original $725,000 awarded by the US Army is in response to the military’s essential need to join dissimilar materials for use in armor on lightweight ground vehicles. RNT will use these funds to perform further research of reactive multilayer joining of silicon carbide (SiC) and titanium (Ti).
RNT’s NanoFoil creates high-performance bonds 100 percent stronger than current epoxy technology, without compromising the integrity of the materials being joined. The company also plans to explore other joining applications of dissimilar materials including additional metal/ceramic combinations.
“The US Army understands the breakthrough NanoFoil represents for the joining of dissimilar materials,” noted Joseph A. Grzyb, RNT’s Chief Executive Officer. “This grant showcases NanoFoil’s importance for military vehicles where equipment capabilities are a matter of life and death.”
RNT is leveraging its commercial success in large area joining of dissimilar materials for sputtering targets and industrial ceramics to highlight NanoFoil’s use for other purposes such as defense. Additionally, NanoFoil’s rapid technology acceptance in other applications including reaction initiation, microelectronics packaging and thermal management is showcasing the versatility of NanoFoil technology to serve a variety of industries and functions.
About RNT
Headquartered in Hunt Valley, Maryland, RNT was founded in 2001 by engineering veterans Timothy P. Weihs, Ph.D., who now serves as Chief Technical Officer, and Omar M. Knio, Ph.D., who is RNT’s Senior Vice President. The company develops and manufactures NanoFoil® to precisely control the instantaneous release of heat energy for reaction initiation and joining applications that current technology can not effectively or economically address. RNT has also developed its patented NanoBond® joining process to ensure the benefits of NanoFoil are maximized.
Commercial distribution of NanoFoil for energetics and joining applications is taking place from RNT’s onsite manufacturing machinery. The company is utilizing its financial backing from a variety of sources – including over $4.5 million in grants from the National Science Foundation – to develop additional manufacturing sites and craft its patented technology for additional applications. RNT has also signed licensing agreements with a number of Fortune 500 Companies. Its breakthrough technology has earned several prestigious awards including the 2005 “R&D 100” from R&D Magazine, the 2005 Nano 50™ from NASA Nanotech Briefs Magazine and recognition in The National Nanotechnology Initiative Strategic Plan in December 2004.For more information please visit www.rntfoil.com
