RNT and Aavid Announce Joint Development Agreement to Create Solution for Cooling High-performance Chips

Hunt Valley, MD – December 9, 2003
RNT, a provider of high-tech products and solutions for component joining, announces a Joint Development Agreement with Aavid Thermalloy, the world’s leading provider of thermal management solutions. The companies will collaboratively develop and market cooling products with thermally conductive, metallic thermal interfaces for high-performance CPU chips that will enable continued product innovations.

New cooling products, which integrate RNT’s patented NanoFoil® joining technology with Aavid’s cooling technology, are being designed in conjunction with a major computer manufacturer. Targeted for high-volume production in 2004, the new cooling products will reduce chip temperatures by 12 to 18 degrees Celsius and improve chip reliability when compared to the best conventional solutions.

“We are delighted about the opportunity to work with an industry leader and innovator such as Aavid,” said Tim Weihs, Ph.D., RNT president and CEO. “By combining Aavid’s expertise with RNT’s breakthrough joining technology, we are providing enhanced solutions that will ultimately allow electronics manufacturers to take full advantage of the faster and smaller computer chips being developed.”

“This partnership supports Aavid's mission to bring the most advanced cooling technology to its customers,” noted Aavid CTO Sukhvinder Kang. “We are excited about the performance of RNT’s foil, which enables us to create solutions extending the cooling capacity of our heat pipe/heat sink and liquid-cooling products to meet the thermal challenge of today’s fastest CPU’s.”

About RNT

RNT has developed methods of soldering microelectronic devices and other components at room temperature without the use of a furnace or a torch. The NanoFoilTM product acts as a local heat source provides exactly the amount of energy needed to melt any solder or braze and join the components without heating the components themselves. This offers manufacturers the ability to decrease costs, increase productivity and enable product innovation, with or without the use of lead-based solders. Current microelectronic applications include replacing current greases, pads, and adhesives with a more conductive solder interface. These solutions also provide advances in microelectronic component mounting and other industries requiring the joining of large and small-scale ceramics and metals, such as defense and aerospace.
